Jul. 31, 2010 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- A man in his 60s was struck and killed Friday by an Amtrak train near the Ardmore station.

About 100 passengers were aboard an eastbound Keystone Corridor train when it hit the pedestrian at 11:20 a.m., an Amtrak spokeswoman said. Authorities had not released the man's identity last night.

The train, No. 646, originated in Harrisburg and had been scheduled to stop in Philadelphia at 11 a.m. and then proceed to New York City.

SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch said Paoli-Thorndale Regional Rail service was suspended after the accident and resumed about 1 p.m.

Riders aboard the Amtrak train were allowed off after 45 minutes, said passenger Jordan Grenyion-Smith. A SEPTA supervisor pointed them in the direction of a trolley station.

Richard Simons, 53, an Ardmore resident, watched investigators from the Church Road bridge over the tracks. Simons, who lives nearby, said he had heard sirens and turned on his police radio before rushing to the bridge.

"I knew it was something big," he said.

The train was not been scheduled to stop at Ardmore. It was going so fast, Simons said, that it took about a half-mile to stop.
