Jul. 29, 2010 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- Two Little League teams from Pennsylvania and four from New Jersey will continue their bids Friday to win state Little League championships and berths in the Mid-Atlantic Regional playoffs next month in Bristol, Conn.
Regional champions will advance to the Little League World Series Aug. 20-29 in Williamsport, Pa.
Council Rock Newtown will take on defending state champion Moon Township for the Pennsylvania crown in the first game of a best-of-three series starting at 5 p.m. in Mansfield. The series continues Saturday and Sunday, if needed.
In New Jersey, a double-elimination tournament in Hamilton Township will determine the state winner. Hunterdon National will face Toms River National in the 5:30 p.m. opener Friday, with Northfield taking on West New York American in the second game at 8 p.m.
The opening-round losers will face each other at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the winners playing at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday, the losers will play at 4 p.m. The championship game will be Monday at 7 p.m.
Council Rock Newtown earned the right to play Moon Township for the Pennsylvania title by beating Media, 12-2, for the Eastern title Monday in a game that ended after the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule. Moon won the Western crown by beating DuBois, 5-3, to finish with a 3-0 record.
The Mid-Atlantic Regional opens Aug. 6. Pennsylvania and New Jersey are scheduled to play their opening regional game against each other on Aug. 7.
"It's a long way [to Mansfield] but the boys are looking forward to the road trip," said Randy Coppola, Council Rock Newtown 's manager.
In other Little League tournament action, Council Rock Holland and Horsham open play Thursday in the Pennsylvania Junior League state tournament for ages 13 and 14 in Robinson Township. Horsham and Greater Wyoming meet at 11:30 a.m., and Holland takes on Greencastle at 8 p.m.
Another Horsham team opens play in Senior League competition for 15-year-olds Friday at 1 p.m. in Emporium. The opponent has not been determined.
